How to Present Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) at SSB

SSB evaluates candidates on a defined set of Officer Like Qualities across all five days. Understanding what these qualities are — and how they are assessed — helps candidates prepare more purposefully.
What Are Officer Like Qualities?
OLQs include factors of planning and organising ability, social adjustment (cooperation, sense of responsibility), social effectiveness (initiative, self-confidence, speed of decision), and dynamic factors like determination and courage. These are assessed across psychological tests, GTO tasks and the interview together.
Demonstrating OLQs in Group Tasks
In Group Discussions and GTO tasks, qualities like cooperation, initiative and leadership are best demonstrated through natural, consistent behaviour — contributing ideas, supporting teammates, and stepping up when the situation calls for it — rather than trying to dominate every task.
Demonstrating OLQs in the Interview
The personal interview allows the Interviewing Officer to probe consistency between what a candidate says about themselves and how they have actually behaved through their life — school, sports, hobbies, and any leadership roles held. Honesty and self-awareness matter more than impressive-sounding but vague answers.
Building OLQs Over Time
Since OLQs reflect genuine personality traits, the most effective preparation is participating in real activities — sports, NCC, group projects, volunteering — that naturally build planning ability, teamwork and confidence well before the SSB date.
